My Creativity Creed

Creativity. It used to seem so ambiguous to me. Reserved for the people that were born with the knack for brainstorming. Check out this Creed that has revolutionized the way I practice the art of creativity.

30x30: 30 Things I Want to Be About In My 30's

I'd highly recommend putting together a list of the things you want to be about--an intentional living list. Keep the vision in front of you. Set daily goals to achieve the bigger picture. Re-adjust when necessary.

Finding Your Purpose

What is my purpose? What should I do with my life? As I work with college students, I find myself in these conversations often. And as I get older, I realize it's being re-defined, re-shaped and sometimes re-rooted.

Should You Go to Grad School?

Sometimes, you get to be a part of something that feels so important, so meaningful, so much greater than you are that it will always be remembered as your once in a lifetime.

That's how I feel about my time spent at The Erikson Institute.  Erikson was not only where I went to graduate school.  It's where I came to understand my place in something greater.

I have a colleague who thinks that graduate school is a waste of money.  He believes that  you can learn everything you need to know online or in print.  Let me say this: I do believe you can become a lot smarter by being an avid reader.  However, in my opinion, you pay to go to the best grad school so that you can sit in the room with the smartest people in your field.  You set yourself up to have personal relationships with professors that are top researchers, will provide you with reflective supervision and will take an interest in your career.  And at the core of "sitting in the room with the smartest people" are the other students.  I wanted to be a shared learner, friend and future collaborator with the most intelligent, diverse group of students possible.

Those were my intentions.  To get smarter.  And to find a high paying job in a field I loved (oops- should have picked a different field).  But it became so much more.  I couldn't help but be caught up in the wonder of the multi-disciplinary approach.  The faculty at Erikson are not only teaching; they are producing leading research that is impacting policies and programs, spearheading community initiatives and new schools and providing direct services to families in need.

Yes, I left Erikson with a great education, relationships with smart people, and an attractive job offer at Loyola.  But more importantly, I left with increased vision, purpose and resolve to do what's right in the lives of kids and their families.

Sometimes I'll take the hard road, make risky career choices, push people to have dialogues and make changes that they weren't ready for.  But I've been set on a course that is right, is needed, is in my heart and has been nurtured.  And I'm forever grateful.

Leave A Light On, Chicago

I've paid taxes in 3 states and 2 countries.  I've lived in the middle of nowhere, the city and the suburbs.  So, I'd like to relay to you--with prior research and extreme conviction--

You can take the girl out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the girl.

And Chicago is MY city.  Because Grand Rapids is nice and all, but it really doesn't count.

Every so often, I HAVE to get back home.  To walk the crowded streets, ride the "El," eat at my favorite restaurants, talk to some of my favorite people.

Meet my brunch buddy, Clay.  We go out for other meals, but I always think our best conversations happen over brunch at Nookies.  Fantastic food.  Great vibe. It's BYOB and the couple next to us was splendidly mixing their own Mimosas.
Of course, we stopped to see the Green River on our way to brunch...

Then, we did what true Chicagoans do on a Saturday- a nice mix of walking and El riding as we shopped and strolled our way through the city.  Of course we ducked in for an afternoon cocktail at Adobo Grill.  Chicagoans, you know.

And finally, dinner!  Enter my tapas teammate, Dara.  We really don't ever discuss where to meet for dinner--it's always tapas at Cafe Iberico.  There are other tapas in town, but we will heatedly argue with you about why Iberico is the best ever.  We co-chair the fan club.

Luckily I was in town for two dinners, so my cute mom came in from the suburbs and met me at another fabulous place- The Grand Lux Cafe. We always request the rotunda- a huge room of windows overlooking the bustle of Michigan Avenue.

I don't want you to leave thinking I'm just a wanderer and foodie (although not bad choices for a life).  Chicago is rich for me because it's the place where I've grown the most intellectually.  Here's my favorite study spot overlooking Rush St. I re-lived my Grad School glory days and worked here for a few hours. That view is life-giving and creativity-injecting.

So, leave a light on, Chicago.  I can't seem to stay away for long...

Farewell, Friends!

Dara and Kate- What amazing lifelong friends you have been. Nothing beats sharing the Taylor U, SpringHill, and Chicago experience. I love you girls!
Gena, Courtney, and Bridget- Our Grad school days are over but when I'm with you I always feel like the fun is just beginning! I can't wait for you to visit MI!
Jessica, you're the best upstairs neighbor I ever had. I love our old and new adventures.
Val, Olivia, and Himala- I have loved working with you at Loyola! You're outstanding doctors and friends.
Biz, I feel like this is just the beginning...I have loved getting to know you!
Dave and Jud- I knew I could count on you for being the last ones out the door. Jud reminded me that I have known him since we were babies. It's so nice to have forever friends!

I love my neighbors!

One of the things about living alone is that it's sometimes sad that
no one greets you at the end of your day.  Except that wasn't the case
when I lived in the Atrium Village in Chicago.  I loved my neighbors.
The feeling was mutual.
It was such a joy to come home each day and be greeted by hugs.
Upon my departure, they invited me to their apartment for a pizza party.
I will miss my budding rock stars- I was often treated to special performances.
What would this life be without the laughter and love of neighbors?
